A high gross payout doesn't matter if the order takes you 15 miles out of your zone. Always evaluate orders based on their dollar-to-mile ratio. Aim for a minimum of $1.50 to $2.00 per mile. This minimizes your vehicle wear and tear and keeps you in hot zones.
Time is your most valuable asset. If a restaurant consistently makes you wait 10-15 minutes past the pickup time, stop accepting orders from them during peak hours. Your hourly rate drops drastically when you are parked waiting for fries.
When analyzing a delivery offer on the map, look at where the drop-off is located. If it's in a residential area 10 miles away from any restaurants, you will have to drive 10 "dead miles" back just to get another ping. Double the mileage of the trip in your head before accepting it.
Invest in high-quality catering or thermal bags. Arriving with hot food increases the likelihood of an added tip after delivery. Furthermore, separating hot and cold items guarantees the customer's ice cream doesn't melt on top of their hot pizza.
